Putting EAP into practice
With Edward de Chazal and Sam McCarter
ELT, EFL, ELF & EAP
With Simon Andrewes
Putting EAP into practice
In this talk we provide a brief overview English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and show how it relates to other branches of English Language Teaching. We then turn to the content and preparation of a syllabus for an EAP course, which can be task-based with a skills focus. Using examples from the new Oxford EAP series, we present materials which integrate skills, language and critical thinking, and which are accessible and practical.
ELT, EFL, ELF & EAP
The assumption of this talk is that English is no longer being taught as a foreign language, as it was in the heyday of EFL, but rather as a lingua franca, a means of communication for work or study where native speakers may at best be marginally involved. If this is so, it has consequences for the classroom which have already been tacitly accepted in our profession and which we teachers, too, need to be more fully aware of.
The presenters
Edward de Chazal has been teaching English since 1987, and has presented, examined and taught in many countries including Turkey, Kuwait and the UK. For many years his main focus has been teaching, researching and writing materials in the field of EAP. He is active in IATEFL and on the executive committee of BALEAP.
Sam McCarter's teaching career spans a period of more than 30 years, starting in Sierra Leone in West Africa as a volunteer English teacher. Sam has written a number of publications on IELTS and EMP and worked as a consultant editor in the field of Tropical Medicine, notably for The Wellcome Trust and various other organisations, including WHO.
Simon Andrewes has been involved in English Language Teaching in various contexts since 1974. For a lot of that time he was based in Granada, Spain, where at different times he worked for the British Council and the University of Granada, managed his own school, and was president of the local English Teachers Association. He currently works in Greenwich, London.
Who is this for?
All EFL/ESOL teachers (newly qualified to experienced).
Also teachers interested in working in the field of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and those who have just started working in this field.
